First Past the Post (FPTP) is the system we use now to elect our MPs in the UK, and local councillors in England and Wales. We put a cross by our chosen candidate and the winner in each of 650 constituencies becomes the MP for that area. Many voters chose tactically to prevent a candidate winning so do not vote for their first choice. The final share of seats in Parliament does not match the national share of votes.
